1984 Post 10: Ending or Warning?
The book ended differently than what was anticipated. And in all honesty, it was an ending that needed to be made at one point or another. There is a lot of books, movies, tv shows, that give into the classic Hollywood ending and give you a “happily ever after”. This book breaks all of that, an irony in itself since it is not a rule to have a tragic ending, but everyone seems to avoid going that direction. Likewise how in Oceania, there are no rules yet people are punished for doing things that are not using done or “shouldn’t be done”. This book was something out of the box, a never before seen idea, concept, society, whatever you want to call it. But this book is more than merely a story, it is a reflection on how us, as a society are heading. It is not the trying to say that there is someone stripping us away of our privacy, and its saying that we are heading in that direction, but we are going without resistance. In this day and age we know what others are doing to the minute, and it isn’t top secret spy cameras, it is their posts on their snapchat stories or their pictures on instagram that tell us that. Do not misread what I am saying, I am completely for social media, there are multiple benefits and it a step towards advancement and the future. But it has shifted perspectives of people today from people 10 or 15 years ago. We have this drive to post things, tell people what is going on, share things out with the public. And while this is a beautiful thing, it is damaging our sense of privacy, we do not privacy as much as we did, we are slowly throwing it away. Soon enough we will be those people walking around in front of telescreens not caring that people are watching. We do that now, cellphones are like portable telescreens, ready to record or take a picture of someone whenever the user wants. If we do not watch ourselves, we will be in Winston’s shoes soon enough, the small lot of us who enjoy privacy while everyone else indulged themselves in the publically.
